Big Boi promises his solo album is going to drop soon. Really.
The Atlanta rapper, real name Antwan Patton, talked to the Sun before taking to the stage at LAX on Saturday night and assured us the record would be out in December or early January. Earlier this year, he promised it would be out in June or July.
Big Boi — half of the Grammy-winning duo Outkast — gave fans an online taste of the record last week by leaking the track ÒFor Your Sorrows,Ó featuring George Clinton and Too Short.
ÒGood things come to those who wait, you know,Ó he said. ÒThe album is done and theyÕll be happy when they get it.Ó
The disc is titled ÒSir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty,Ó a reference to Big BoiÕs late father. Chico Dusty was his nickname when he was a pilot in the Air Force.
ÒHe was a bad, bad man, one of the best dudes IÕve ever known and, you know, itÕs like IÕm walking in my fatherÕs shoes,Ó he said. ÒHe was a stand-up guy and was serious about what he did and IÕm his boy and IÕm going to put my best foot forward and give it everything IÕve got.Ó
Big Boi said the record will stay close to home musically.
ÒItÕs going to stay funk-based,Ó he said. ÒThe lyrics are going to stay deadly, it ainÕt nothinÕ but venom, and you know, itÕs top-notch, you know, hip-hop, funky music.Ó
In addition to his upcoming solo album, fans have been asking about a new Outkast album. He and partner Andre 3000 originally hoped to get a record on shelves before the end of the year, but it looks like it will be a while before the duo release a follow-up to 2006Õs ÒIdlewild.Ó
ÒI really canÕt call a time frame, man, youÕve got to talk to Andre Benjamin about that,Ó Big Boi said. ÒItÕs not on me. If it was up to me, weÕd be doing an Outkast album right now.Ó
He said he doesnÕt expect any new Outkast material will be released until both he and Andre 3000 complete solo projects.
The two combined their solo efforts in 2003 and released a double CD, ÒSpeakerboxxx/The Love Below.Ó The album won three Grammy Awards, including album of the year, and became the best-selling rap album of all time.
Big Boi said he enjoys coming to Las Vegas, where he is well-received by club audiences.
ÒEvery time I come here and destroy a stage, the next day or so they call me, wanting me to come back,Ó he said. ÒI like the fact that the venues are up close and personal. IÕm used to doing arenas and theaters. (In Vegas) you can ... touch the fans and mingle and get to feel the energy up close and personal.Ó
